Ángel Marcos

Ángel Marcos is an established contemporary artist, who originates from Spain. Marcos was born in 1955. Some of the artist's contemporarie that are from the same generation and country include Miquel Barceló and Juan Muñoz.

Angel Marcos grew up during the 1970s and was influenced by the artistic culture of the time. The art sphere of the 1970s was characterized by a longing to evolve and strengthen itself, as a response to the many tensions of the previous decade. One of the most important movement of the 1970s was Conceptualism, which appeared as an offshoot of Minimalism, while the experimental, creative journey of Process art emerged by combining essential aspects of Conceptualism with further considerations on art itself. The initial ideas of environmentalism bounced from Land Art, which took art into earth itself, sculpting the land and bringing art to the outdoors. For the first time since the decline of Abstract Expressionism, Expressive figure painting slowly resurfaced and regained its status, especially in Germany through the works of world renowned figures Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. The city of New York persisted as the most prominent artistic hub of the decade, with global artists wandering through the downtown scene, frequenting bars and art galleries, strengthening the idea of New York City as a cosmopolitan and sophisticated cultural capital. In the eastern part of the globe, Japanese and Korean artists who held a strong interest in the European philosophy of phenomenology, associated with the Mono-Ha movement, exploring and shifting the frontiers between natural and industrial materials. Using stone, glass, cotton, sponge, wood, oil and water, they aimed to create life to artworks that would emphasize the ephemeral state of these various elements and their surroundings, playing with their interdependency.

Spain has played a crucial role in the growth of art in the twentieth century. In the early 1900s, a young Pablo Picasso developed a distinctively expressive approach to figuration in the post-Impressionist era, initially with his Blue then Rose periods, although he was to settle in Paris in 1904. Picasso was also the key founding member of the Cubist movement, a group in which he was joined by fellow Spaniard Juan Gris. Both Salvador Dali and Joan Miro were leading figures in the Surrealist movement, though they were also lived in France for large parts of their careers. Throughout the twentieth century the political and cultural landscape of Spain was ruled by the totalitarian autocracy of General Franco whose dictatorship ruled the country, in one form or another, from 1939 until 1975, at which time the monarchy was restored to Juan-Carlos I who subsequently implemented considerable reform. The Franco regime was noted for its brutal anti-communist stance, and the departure of leading intellectual and cultural figures that elected not to live under an oppressive regime. The cultural life of the avant-garde suffered significantly, since liberal artistic movements are often noted for their leftist leanings. Important modern and contemporary Spanish artists include Antoni Tapíes, Eduardo Chillida, Eduardo Arroyo, and Manolo Valdes.

Ángel Marcos is represented and exhibited by Galerie Ernst Hilger in Vienna, Austria.
