Maria Micozzi

Maria Micozzi, Italian artist, was born in Tolentino, Macerata, Italy on 1939.

Since her early youth, she showed an early and clear creative talent, by recognizing painting and sculpture as means of expression specific of herself, in spite of the fact she never attended a School of Arts, due to family reasons.

She took up classical studies, enrolling later to the faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Milan University, Italy. Later, always in Milan, she cultivated the most beloved studies of Philosophy first, followed by the ones in Neuropsychology and Psychoanalysis. Last but not least, she studied Epistemology, concentrating on the theory of the “Complex Systems”, according to Gregory Bateson’s “relational“ concept first and then Prigogine's and Morin's.

With an intellectual background in both science and the humanities, Micozzi’s work reflects her wide-ranging interests. Relation, in its necessary and universal nature, lies at the very heart of Micozzi’s thought. She made art her occupation, experimenting with untried technical and formal solutions and using basic materials such as wire or string, among others. These she sometimes uses as a support for painterly quality in the great Renaissance tradition from Leonardo to Michelangelo.

The true locus of her synthesis, however, is on the compositional level. “In her work, oriented as it is towards a systemic world, ...the fantastic dimension arises from the labyrinthine complexity of infinite possible relations... Her vital yearning towards the formal recomposition of totality, ...it undermines the rigid and schematic juxtapositions between figurative and abstract... and delineates new possible connections and relations.” - Giuseppe Vannucci.

Maria Micozzi’s career has included an intense round of exhibitions, in Italy and abroad. In the late 1980s she was featured in the New York Expo; in Spain she was invited to join an exhibition of international artists organized by the Ministry of Culture in Madrid. There have been exhibitions featuring her work in Frankfurt, Miami, London and New York, while several one-person exhibitions have been held in Germany and the Netherlands.

Micozzi’s epistemological demon still drives her towards themes of complexity and the denunciation of the paradoxes. Maria Micozzi continues to explore complexity in the everyday through unusual relations between differences, experimenting with innovative approaches in both formal and technical terms but without diminishing the stylistic unity of her work.
